Using GPT for narrative text annotation

Narratives play an essential role in shaping human beliefs and building and maintaining social communities. And yet there are still significant limitations for understanding narrative communication at large scale due to the complexity of narrative constructs and our ability to artificially model them. In this talk, I will share recent experiments conducted in our lab using GPT for large-scale text annotation. Recent research has suggested that GPT can approximate human-like understanding of complex cognitive constructs. We test a variety of narrative constructs such as setting, anachrony, and narrativity and share our experiences and results of different prompting scenarios and best practices. Our experiences suggest that GPT can be a viable solution to text annotation for narrative understanding.
